Small-scale hydropower is one of the most cost-effective and reliable of renewable energy technologies. Water can be piped from a certain level to a lower level, with the resulting water pressure being used to do work. The water pressure moves a mechanical component, then that movement involves the conversion of the energy of the water into mechanical energy. Hydro turbines convert water pressure into mechanical shaft power, which can be used to drive an electricity generator.

They have high efficiency (70 – 90 per cent), by far the best of all the technologies such as solar. Hydropower is the world’s No.1 source of renewable energy.
